Sisters of Freedom: African American Women Moving Us Forward

Monday, September 23, 6:30-8 p.m.
“Sisters of Freedom” Exhibit Opening and Presentation

The evening’s special guest will be Erin Goseer Mitchell, a celebrated author whose compelling book, Born Colored, Life before Bloody Sunday, delivers poignant insights about her life as a child growing up in the segregated south before the Civil Rights Movement. Author will be selling copies of her book.

Exhibit Date: September 21 – October 21

“Sisters of Freedom” is an exhibit of classic and modern poster art paying homage to African-American women who have transformed their lives, their culture and their country. These phenomenal women – activists, entertainers, teachers and preachers – represent some of the most indomitable figures from the 1800s to the present. The exhibit in its entirety highlights the work of 41 women leaders (as well as 33 Freedom Riders) who have changed the course of history with their commitment to, and passion for, social justice and racial equity. The exhibit was curated by the Syracuse Cultural Workers and provides a dramatic glimpse of the power and passion of women who transformed their lives and the country.

The exhibit is presented by Mount Mary University of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mount Mary, founded in 1913 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, was Wisconsin’s first four year degree-granting Catholic college for women.
