About the Show

Shortly after the emancipation from slavery, a group of African Americans sought a new life and settled on the outskirts of Greeley, Colorado, in a town called Dearfield. O.T. Jackson, a phenomenal entrepreneur and visionary, founded the agricultural colony in the autumn of 1910 with only seven families. By 1921 the settlement had grown into a prosperous community of more than 700. The settlement struggled with harsh winters, dry summers and failed crops. The Great Depression and the war took its toll on the community and by 1940 only 12 people lived in the colony. Today Dearfield is a ghost town, but the heroic exploits and the legacy of the early settlers live on. Vincent W. Lewis uses rich hues to capture the courageous and proud heritage of these African Americans in the Dearfield Collection.
