Scope and Content

The Ruth Steiner Papers (1960s-1990) include information acquired throughout Steiner's involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. The collection also contains material that reflects the activities of other civil rights activists throughout the 1960s. This collection is rich in speeches, Martin Luther King, Jr. items, Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party documents, and newspaper clippings that relate to African Americans from the 1960s to the 1980s.

The Ruth Steiner Papers have been organized into four series: papers, speeches, newspaper articles and clippings, and publications. The first series, papers, includes material gathered by Steiner throughout her career in Mississippi and Colorado. It includes newsletters and other material from the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, speeches and statements made from various individuals (such as L. Sylvester Odom and Julian Bond), and correspondence with the Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The material ranges in date from 1960 to 1986 and is arranged alphabetically.

The second series, speeches, consists of several talks made throughout the 1960s on the civil rights movement. The material is arranged chronologically.

The third series is made up of newspaper articles and clippings from 1962-1965, 1968, 1983, and 1984. The majority of the articles are from 1968 and relate to Martin Luther King, Jr. Coverage during the 1980s pertains to Regis Groff and Dr. Bernard F. Gipson. The material in this series is arranged chronologically.

The fourth series, publications, consists of various magazines from the 1960s-1990 that concentrate entire issues on the civil rights movement or African American culture. Some of these publications include Ebony, Newsweek, Time, and Life. The material in this series is arranged chronologically.
