The Ruth Steiner Papers have been organized into four series: papers,
speeches, newspaper articles and clippings, and publications. The
first series, papers, includes material gathered by Steiner throughout
her career in Mississippi and Colorado. It includes newsletters
and other material from the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party,
speeches and statements made from various individuals (such as L.
Sylvester Odom and Julian Bond), and correspondence with the Colorado
Civil Rights Commission. The material ranges in date from 1960 to
1986 and is arranged alphabetically.
The second series, speeches, consists of several talks made
throughout the 1960s on the civil rights movement. The material
is arranged chronologically.
The third series is made up of newspaper articles and clippings
from 1962-1965, 1968, 1983, and 1984. The majority of the articles
are from 1968 and relate to Martin Luther King, Jr.
Coverage during the 1980s pertains
to Regis Groff and Dr. Bernard F. Gipson. The
material in this series is arranged chronologically.
The fourth series, publications, consists of various magazines
from the 1960s-1990 that concentrate entire issues on the civil
rights movement or African American culture. Some of these publications
include Ebony, Newsweek, Time, and Life. The material in this series
is arranged chronologically.
