Scope and Content

Among other pursuits, Joan Reese served as a longtime volunteer in the Western History Department at the Denver Public Library. These papers include her research notes (for an unfinished book) on African Americans in Colorado. The collection contains index cards on various subjects pertaining to blacks in Colorado. Many of the cards function as an annotated bibliography that will prove useful for subsequent researchers. Reese also compiled photographs, newspaper articles, correspondence, and papers for her research purposes – these are included, too.

Photographs

The collection is divided into three series: Index Cards, Papers and Newspaper Articles, and Photographs.

Joan Reese's working notes comprise the first series. The Index Cards series includes notes taken and bibliographical information on various subjects. They are arranged in alphabetical order by subject.

The second series, Papers and Newspaper Articles, consists of correspondence, short histories, newspaper articles, and miscellaneous notes.

The third series, Photographs, are various images gathered during her research. Subjects include Hattie McDaniel, George Morrison, Sr., and Burnis McCloud.

In order to avoid confusion, dates, for the most part, have been omitted from this finding aid. Reese gathered her data in a number of ways over a large span of time.
