Biographical Information

Daniel Grove was born on 14 December 1923, in Milport, Alabama, to Elbert V. and Mary Young Grove. At age three, the family moved to Tuscaloosa County, where he grew up. He was the eighth of ten children

On 07 November 1940, Dan and Mary E. Hyche were united in holy matrimony. To this union five sons were born: Elbert G., Donnie R., Kenny R. (deceased), Robert A., and Maxie B.

Grove received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Stillman College, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He worked toward a Master's Degree in Business Administration at the University of Denver. He retired as a major in the Army Medical Service Corps, having completed the Company and Field Grade Officer's Course at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, and attended Command and General School at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, and the University of Nevada Reno,-. He was the administrative assistant to the Protestant Chaplain at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital from 1950 to 1957. Grove was the first black male to serve in the juvenile court system from 1957 to 1971 as the counselor for boys, probation counselor, assistant superintendent, and finally the superintendent at Juvenile Hall (now Gilliam Youth Center). He was Director of the Denver Motor Vehicle Division from 1971 to 1974.

Also, Governor John Vanderhoof appointed Grove to the State Adult Parole Board. He served from July 1974 to July 1984 as Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Board.

Daniel Grove was elected to the Colorado State House of Representatives in 1964 and again in 1966. He wrote legislation for the Colorado County Jail Work Release Program and was sponsored by the Colorado Legislature to participate in the final Civil Rights March on Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965.

Grove died in Denver on 13 September 1999.

The Daniel Grove Papers (1943-1999) include correspondence, personal papers, political material, and photographs that reflect his time in the military and House of Representatives. The bulk of these materials come from the 1960s.

The Daniel Grove Papers have been organized into two series: personal and political papers. The first series has been divided into three subseries: general, correspondence, and photographs. The first subseries, general, contains financial material, newspaper articles, press releases, speaking engagement material, poems, an obituary, and a biography. The second subseries, correspondence, consists primarily of various personal and business correspondence dating from the 1960s to the 1980s. The third subseries, photographs, consists of both personal and professional photographs. Every subseries is arranged alphabetically.

The second series in the Daniel Grove Papers, political papers, is divided into three subseries: general, correspondence, certificates, letters, posters, and soundtrack. The first subseries, general, contains background information, brochures, and general material gathered during his terms as a State Representative. The second subseries, correspondence, consists solely of correspondence as a State Representative. The third subseries, certificates, includes certificates gathered while a State Representative. Every subseries is arranged alphabetically.
