Biographical Note

Born in Denver on 26 June 1921 to Mr. And Mrs. Hiram Gash.

Started playing the piano at the age of 9. First studied with Helen Cuno Calogeras.

Studied with E. Robert Schmitz and his wife Germaine Schmitz.

Moved to San Francisco (date unknown) to study with the Schmitzes. Worked for 14 years at the Schmitz studio.

Made his first New York City appearance in 1941 at the Town Hall.

Shortly after his appearance at Carnegie Hall in November 1949, Gash was awarded both a Fulbright and John Hay Whitney Fellowship for study in Europe.

Made his European debut in 1950 as a soloist for the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg, Austria.

Played internationally, largely in Europe and Canada.

Also worked as a journeyman shipfitter.
