Biographical Note

Rev. Josephine Falls was born in Pickens, Mississippi, on 09 April 1928, to Robert and Parthenia House. She attended Richland Vocational School. On 02 August 1946, she and Benny Falls united in marriage. For the next five years, the couple worked as farmers. They moved to Denver, Colorado in early-1952.

Rev. Falls immediately began to attend the Christ Temple Church of Christ Holiness (later named Bethel Church of Christ Holiness) and devoted herself as choir member, Sunday school teacher, counselor, and Deaconess. From 1957-1979, Rev. Falls served as Chair of the Deaconess Board and interacted often with the Western State Baptist Convention and the Northern District Baptist Association.

In addition to religious activities, Rev. Falls worked as a collection clerk, credit investigator, and volunteer for the Denver Police Department. She and her husband raised nine children.

Rev. Falls continues to reside in Denver and preaches as an ordained minister at Mount Gilead Baptist and Pastor Fishers of Men Fellowship Church.

Scope and Content Note

Primarily, the papers contain photocopies of accolades that have been showered upon her by various religious organizations. Also of note are two photographs and three pieces of correspondence. For a more thorough peek at Rev. Falls, refer to the “Biographical Data” in Box 1, F1 – specifically, the Welton Street Stories publication, which also provides substance for scholars conducting research on the Five Points Neighborhood of Denver. The miscellaneous item represents Rev. Falls’s involvement as a chaplain with the Denver Police Department.
