Biographical Note

1946: Graduated from T.J. Harris High School (Meridian, Mississippi) as Salutatorian

1950: Earned B.S. in Music Education from Tennessee A & I State University (Nashville)

1950-1957: Teacher in Meridian Separate School District

1957: Garnered M.S. in Music Education from Tennessee A & I State University

1959-1961: Music Specialist for Jones County Schools (Laurel, Mississippi)

1962-1964: Private music teacher (Laurel, Mississippi)

1965-1986: Music Teacher for Littleton (Colorado) Public Schools

1973-1974: Instructor, Black Studies Department, University of Northern Colorado (Greeley)

1977: Received M.A. in Librarianship from University of Denver

1986: Retired from teaching

Scope and Content

The Carrie Collins Collection is divided into four distinct series: Biographical, Publications, Personal, and Photographs.

The Biographical series contains two different resumes.

The Publications series is broken down into five subseries: 45s, Scores, Programs, Awards, and Clippings. The 45s subseries (Box 1, FF2) contains a 45 RPM record of two songs that Collins wrote and performed – “Love for Mankind” and “Two Hundred Years Ago.” The Scores subseries (Box 1, FF3) includes copies of sheet music that Collins penned – “Look to Jesus,” “Mother-Dear,” and “Love for Mankind.” The Programs subseries (Box 1, FF4) consists of flyers and ads that list Collins as a program participant. Included in the Awards subseries (Box 1, FF5) are a certificate of appreciation from the Colorado Music Educators Association and charter member recognition from the Rocky Mountain Musicians Association. The Clippings subseries (Box 1, FF6) incorporates press coverage, mostly newspapers, of Collins’s career highlights.

The Personal series consists of material that relates to Clinton Collins, Sr., Carrie Collins’s husband. An obituary, funeral program, newspaper clipping, and resume appear in Box 1, FF7.

The Photographs series (Box 1, FF8) contains photocopies of two images: One of Clinton Collins receiving the Medal of Freedom from the French Government and another of Collins’s son (shown in bottom right of image) in front of the Capitol in Washington, D.C., where he worked as an intern.
