Biographical Note

Born on 23 August 1916 in Newark, New Jersey

Completed religious and secular training at Yeshiva University in New York

Served Orthodox synagogues in Dover, New Jersey and Newport News, Virginia

Member of the executive committee of the Rabbinical Council of America

From 1957 until his sudden death, he served as spiritual leader of Beth Hamedrash Hagadol Congregation in Denver, Colorado

Published a book of poetry, Windows to My Soul , in 1963

Appointed to Denver Housing Commission in 1965 by Mayor Thomas Currigan

Died on 30 October 1966

Scope and Content

Although active in several civic endeavors (such as the Advisory Committee of the Division of Special Education of the Colorado State Department of Education, the Zionist Organization of America, the Denver Metropolitan Association on Mental Retardation, and the Anti-Defamation League), the Rabbi Samuel Adelman Papers (1957-1966) at the Blair-Caldwell Library only include correspondence, photographs, and newspaper articles acquired during his time on the Anti-Discrimination Commission.

The Rabbi Samuel Adelman Papers have been organized into three subseries: correspondence, photographs, and newspaper articles. The first subseries, correspondence, contains correspondence with the Anti-Discrimination committee from 1957-1966 and is arranged chronologically. The second subseries, photographs, consists of one undated committee photograph. The third subseries, newspaper articles, consists of articles pertaining to the committee in 1965.
