Lose Yourself in the Legacy of African Americans

The Archive Collection consists of more than 150 collections of personal and professional papers, artifacts, photos, scrapbooks – all original – of great African Americans who shaped the West.*

The Archive Space also includes:

  • Video and audiotaped histories and listening/viewing areas
  • Papers and doctoral theses on microfilm
  • A research area of 2,700 square feet with study space
  • Over 1,900 linear feet of archival storage space

Some examples from our collections:

Regis Groff – The Groff Collection includes information acquired throughout his work in the educational field and his political life. The collection includes materials which reflect his involvement in the Colorado Senate as well as his experiences as an educator. The collection is rich in personal papers, political material and photographs.

Bernard F. Gipson, Sr. M.D. – The Gipson Collection includes information acquired during his career as a doctor and throughout his life. The collection is comprised of correspondence, lectures, newspaper articles and publications that relate to the African American community. This collection enhances historians and researchers understanding of an African American professional’s perspective of Denver from the 1950s through the 1990s.

Carolyn Jones – The Jones Collection includes materials saved at Odyssey West Magazine. This material includes photographs, award certificates and plaques, publications of Odyssey West, Odyssey, Afro-Denver, Afro-Colorado, and Colorado Lifestyle. The photograph files are valuable historical research tools. They consist of many figures throughout the African American community, both at the national and local level.


The Archive area also includes "The Essence of Huey P. Newton," a rendering by Darrel Anderson from A Huey P. Newton Story, a Black Starz original film directed by Spike Lee, as well as a beautiful study area.
